Have you ever thought what it would take to silence a 720 kva generator?
Yes, that's right, a 720 kva generator. The engine is a twin-turboed V12 diesel that filled a 40 foot shipping container with just enough room for maintenance. The aim was to produce a pair of silencers so that a local toughened glass manufacturer to could run 24 hours without complaint from the local neighbourhood, which the original silencers could not achieve. The silencers pictured are one of a pair fitted to the roof of the container and have a 200 mm bore (8 inches) and made from thick gauge mild steel. Even after only one silencer was fitted the difference in sound was notably quieter. The generator has now changed ownership but the silencers are in still very good condition and performing their job very quietly 5 years after being manufactured.
